Next, create a New User. After clicking on the Create a New User button or link, this screen appears:
Adding a student account to the system requires that you do the following:
- Enter the desired username.
- Determine student understanding of the alphabet. If your student recognizes all of the letters of the alphabet and knows his/her sounds, you may elect to click on the Skip Basic Alphabet box. This option is used for students who have a basic understanding of the alphabet and need only a review. It involves lesson content throughout lessons 2 and 29.
After entering the information for the student, you may press Create to return to the main login page. If you desire to create another user, click on the Create a New User link. Please note: The standard Intensive Phonics at Home package comes with the capability to run five students accounts. Additional student logins must be purchased separately.
Allowing Students to Begin Using the Software
(Installation & Operating Manual, page 9)
- Students should have paper and a pencil ready for use with each lesson.
- They will click on the Intensive Phonics at Home icon and then on the appropriate Login button.
- They will then enter the username that has been assigned and press Next.
- Students are required to move through the lessons sequentially. Yellow framed boxes indicate current or incomplete lessons, blue framed boxes indicate a completed lesson, black framed boxes indicate overridden lessons, and red framed boxes indicate failed lessons.
- There are two Lesson Manager screens. Students are automatically directed to the screen on which they are currently working. The tabs on the left side of the screen allow movement between the two screens.
- It is suggested that you work with the students as they begin using the software to ensure they understand the Lesson Manager and the flow of the lessons.
- Phonemic Awareness activities are enabled after students complete Lesson 1. The activities allow students to develop rhyming, sound recognition, segmentation, blending and manipulation, and substitution skills. In addition, students identify words in syllables.
- Students will launch Interim Tests (IT) at specific intervals. These tests check student mastery of all skills taught to that point. Printable Interim Test reports are provided at the end of each Interim Test. They provide details of student performance.
- Fun with Phonics activities allow students to reinforce the concepts learned in lessons in a fun and engaging format. The activities are enabled as lessons are completed, providing a reward for student progress.
